The ninth General Assembly of the European Forum of Muslim Women was held in Istanbul from 4th to 6th April 2014. It gathered the founding members and representatives from member associations based in more than thirteen European countries, among which France, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Romania, Bosnia and Macedonia. Muslim women living all over Europe met to share the activities and achievements they have accomplished in the last four years, elect the new Board and President, and discuss the main guidelines and stakes regarding the next mandate.
The General Assembly was the occasion to consider new opportunities to enhance cooperation and coordination through Europe, while strengthening participation to the social dialogue. Indeed, in this time of deep economic crisis, which stirred up an identity crisis, it is more than ever essential to make best use of all necessary means to ensure respect of fundamental rights, and fight against the rise of intolerance and the loss of values. The General Assembly recalled the fundamental role of the European Forum of Muslim Women in contributing to social peace and harmony.
After approving the annual activity report and the financial support, the General Assembly full members elected the new Board, which consists of five members: Mrs Lamia El Amri (Sweden), Mrs Dorsaf Ben Dhiab (France), Mrs Maryam Khalil (UK), Mrs Sehija Dedovic (Bosnia) and Ms Zaynab Marrakchi (Sweden). The Board members then met to elect the new President of the European Forum of Muslim Women, Mrs Lamia El Amri, for the 2014-2018 mandate.
During the handover ceremony, the new President gave her first official speech to thank former President Noura Jaballah for her great commitment to improving the condition of Muslim women in Europe, during two consecutive mandates. She also congratulated the member associations for their tremendous work and encouraged them to always show more energy and perseverance in their citizen commitment.
