  • UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women
  • 7 November in Brussels
  • EFOMW participated in the meeting organized by the United Nations Human Rights Office, where the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Ms. Dubravka Å imonović presented the results of her recent studies on violence against women in politics and violence against women online.

Gender-specific motivations and discrimination can have devastating consequences to women's inclusion in society and can deprive them of exercising and realizing their political rights and prevent them from enjoying freedom of opinion and expression. In the end it undermines the credibility of democratic processes and institutions.

The meeting was an opportunity for Brussels based civil society organizations to discuss the status of violence against women in Europe.

EFOMW used this occasion to draw attention to the need to
    • apply an intersectional approach when dealing with violences faced by women online and in politics,
    • underlined the fact of existence of the strong gaps between women from minority groups and other women when it violences faced, and the structural and institutional nature of these violences,
    • and highlighted that the exclusion faced by Muslim women when it comes to political sphere, the political rhetoric and the legislation in place in many European countries in itself is a first violence that disables these women from pursuing political office.

Consequences of this kind of discriminational practices can be devastating for minority women in European societies.
